Maison Gannac’s Citron de Menton

Have you ever wondered what gives our Mirabeau Rosé Gin its intricate notes? Allow us to introduce you to the fragrant Citron de Menton IGP, one of the aromatic botanicals that gives our gin its distinctly fresh and Mediterranean character.

Tucked away along the Italian border, Menton is a quaint village that often escapes the spotlight amidst its more famous neighbours like Nice and Monaco. Referred to as the “Pearl of France,” Menton holds a unique charm rooted in its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and the heart of its allure—the Citron de Menton.

It is said that when Adam and Eve had to leave the Garden of Eden, Eve took one of the ‘golden fruits’. Fearing God’s anger, Adam persuaded Eve to get rid of it. She agreed on the condition that she could choose where to bury it. Finding the stunning bay that is now Menton, she buried the fruit, believing they had discovered paradise once again. Lemon trees began to flourish, shaping Menton into the picturesque town it is today.

Sheltered by the Maritime Alps, Menton enjoys mild temperatures year-round, creating an ideal microclimate for the cultivation of the Citron de Menton which dates back to the 15th century. It reached its peak in the 18th century when millions of lemons were shipped to the United States and Russia and they played a crucial role in saving sailors from scurvy. At its peak, Menton boasted around 80,000 lemon trees, but cultivation faced a decline due to the absence of a port. The frost of 1956 and increasing tourist activity further diminished this once-thriving agricultural practice.

Nevertheless, the Citron de Menton continues to be celebrated for its rich essence and natural sweetness. Beyond its mild sourness, it has little to no bitterness and the peel is bursting with essential oils. What further distinguishes these lemons is their exceptional tenderness, allowing for a pleasant consumption of the whole fruit, including the peel. These distinct properties make the Citron de Menton a prime botanical in the Mirabeau Rosé Gin.

Sourced from Maison Gannac, formerly known as La Maison du Citron, this esteemed supplier was founded in 1988 by Laurent Gannac. Now collaboratively managed with his son Adrien, this family enterprise specialises in the production of organic citrus fruits, with a particular emphasis on the Citron de Menton IGP. These lemons have earned the prestigious Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP) label, highlighting its geographical origin and distinctive qualities associated with the Menton region. The IGP not only acknowledges the geographical origin and unique characteristics tied to the Menton region but also imposes stringent standards on its cultivation and production.
