Appreciating Our Heroes

During this difficult and unsettling time, we asked you to nominate your heroes who have been doing extraordinary work to support and help those around them. We’ve been overwhelmed by your responses, and wanted to share with you some of the stories that really stood out and touched us.

Newsletter Winner – Steph Haines

Please may I nominate Steph Haines for your competition? She is working endless hours to look after the homeless, many who have additional needs, during this terrifying time. She selflessly puts herself into the frontline every day to ensure people have food, drink, a roof over their head and sometimes just a compassionate ear to hear them.

I wish to nominate my friend Susan Sheldon. A nurse in charge of emergency procedures at Warwick hospital. Susan has been working tirelessly long 12 hour shifts 7 days a week along with looking after her elderly mother. Susan helped me through a very difficult time when my mother was ill giving great support to all my family. Mum finally passed away last October. Susan was such a great support. I really would like her to get recognition for all her years in nursing devotion to the NHS especially trying to fight this Silent war !

I would like to nominate my sister Barbara Leon-Hunt to win a prize. Her job is staff support for an nhs hospital trust so she is not frontline staff, but she has been working all hours to get things in motion to help all the frontline staff at this turbulent time. Organising everything from food and drink packages to accommodation and emotional support and this has taken her into the frontline going around the wards to help the staff. She is the most unselfish person I know and I think it would be lovely to give something back to her.

Instagram Winner @nessyvanessy1

My mum, @nessyvanessy1, has spent her NHS career helping find and diagnose breast cancer and reassure her patients as a mammographer, and is ready to move back and perform chest x rays on infected patients – a massively under recognised team on the frontline and she is still making sure everyone else is taken care of and prepared to sacrifice her leave to help out her team. She deserves a break and some recognition for how hard she works in an area which is not often appreciated in the NHS. She’s also an amazing mum who couldn’t see her kids this valentines thanks to one being quarantined and one working in the NHS.

I would like to nominate my sister, @nbippy because despite being classed as high risk she is still looking after other people – my elderly mother who is self isolating, her friend who needs to get back and forth from the hospital and also taking her to visit her dying father, she is happy to go into the supermarkets to make sure people have food and she takes it to their doorsteps. Everyday she acts selflessly to help others and risks her own health. She has a choice and has chosen to help where she can.

I’d like to nominate my Mum @naomihamilton59 for so many reasons. Mum is a medial nurse for the NHS and is currently nursing and caring for my uncle who is battling pancreatic cancer which is 24×7. She’s also trying to nurse others whilst juggling her own life and has been asked to step up and work extra shifts, she’s exhausted and mentally drained. She’s feeling very down at the moment and needs cheering up. It’s been a very rough time for her and the whole family and she’s the glue that holds everything together, really don’t know what any of us would do without her. She doesn’t judge, she’s a great listener, very trustworthy and unconditionally supportive. Everyone needs someone like my Mum around and I wish the world was filled with more people like her, she’s wonderful and so kind!!

Facebook Winner Leah Georgiou

I would like to nominate my daughter, Leah Georgiou. She is a paramedic training to be an Advanced Care Practitioner in a very busy hospital. She has had to separate from us and from her boyfriend, because she is caring for Covid 19 patients. She sees people dying every day. She is only 25 and on the front line every day. All we are being asked to do is sit at home and have a glass of wine or two in the sunshine. I’d love her to have a surprise and something to share with her boyfriend when this is all over. Thank you x

My daughter Denise Falworth, who is on the frontline in the Royal Surrey hospital as well as my son-in-law. They can’t visit his very sick mother because they are the people at the MOST risk .( I would like to nominate all the wonderful people who are caring for us and putting their lives at risk).

Would like to nominate Dr and Dr Pritchard, a married couple and both NHS doctors on the frontline, putting their own concerns aside despite having three young children at home to care for.

Thank you again to everyone who is helping our loved ones and communities get through this difficult time!
